Is Lead a Concern for My Home?

Written to inform, not alarm. Lead is a real, well-documented issue for some homes — and not relevant to most. This page explains where it actually comes from and how to know if it applies to you.

Where lead actually comes from

It's rarely about the water source

Lead in drinking water almost always enters after the water leaves the treatment plant — not at the source. It comes from lead service lines connecting a home to the water main, from lead solder used in older plumbing, or from brass fixtures and faucets that contain lead even when the rest of a home's plumbing is plastic.

This means a municipal utility can be doing everything right, and a specific home can still have a real lead concern — it depends on that home's own plumbing and service line, not on the water source.

How to know if it applies to you

Three real ways to check

Home age

Homes built before 1986 — the year the federal government banned lead from new residential plumbing — may contain lead solder in their plumbing.

Service line

Some older homes, more often in older cities, are connected to the water main by a lead service line.

Testing

A water test is the only way to know for certain whether lead is present at a given tap — see Water Filtration 101 for real, independent testing options and what they cost.

What this means for choosing a system

A separate decision from carbon vs. RO

Lead reduction is not tied to which Beor Carbon+ tier fits your water — that decision is based on whether your municipality uses chlorine or chloramine. Lead reduction is a separate, optional upgrade available on either Carbon+ V1 or Carbon+ Elite, worth considering if any of the three factors above apply to your home.

If you're unsure, a water test is the most reliable way to know — and we're glad to point you toward that option before you decide anything.
